STEMinist Spotlight (Week 1) - Chloe Welch

Hello readers! In honor of March being Women's History Month, I wanted to take a moment each week and highlight a female in my network that embodies leadership, creativity, collaboration, and strength in the STEM industry.

The first spotlight I am eager to share with you all is my dear friend, Chloe Welch. Chloe is an environmental specialist for the State of Ohio's Environmental Protection Agency, specifically within the Division of Surface Water. Take a moment to read Chloe's story and connect with her professionally!

Tell me a little bit about what you do!

I work for the State of Ohio at the Environmental Protection Agency within the Division of Surface Water. What that means is that I monitor and assess Ohio's stream, river and lake resources to ensure they are healthy for the aquatic life that resides in them, as well as usable for recreating and enjoyment by the citizens of Ohio.

What's your education background?

I have a Bachelor's of Science in Environmental Science from THE Ohio State University (2014). I am also midway through a graduate program at tOSU to obtain a Master's in Environment and Natural Resources with a minor in Public Policy & Management.

How did you got interested in your industry?

My parents raised me to be interested in and care about the environment and the natural world around us. Growing up we spent our free time hiking, biking, camping, and boating in local parks and I always felt an immense connection to nature and held a desire to protect and restore our environment - especially our precious water resources.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

This past year I was accepted into and consequently successfully completed our Agency's internal Leadership Development program. I was able to network with and learn from a variety of staff from other divisions and groups within our Agency, while we tackled a variety of management and leadership training sessions in a safe and enriching learning environment.

Real Talk - What is something you wish you could tell your 13 year old self?

It's ok to make mistakes or to change your mind. Take every learning opportunity presented to you and embrace it with open arms.

Finally...what do you like to do outside of work?

In my free time I like to hang out with my dog, Bean, and spend as much time outside as I can. My partner and I love to go hiking, running, kayaking and camping. I also love to travel and cook, and enjoy Columbus's great local craft beer and food scene. I am a huge live music fan and enjoy seeing live shows big and small.
